Founded by James Patrick (Jim) Baen (* October 22, 1943,
† June 12, 2006). After working in the complaints
department at Ace, he moved to be an editor for "Galaxy"
and "If", then returning to Ace to head the
Science Fiction line. After that he went to head the
SF line at Tor before he founded Baen Books in 1983.
Baen soon became a renowned publisher of SF literature
and caused quite a stir when it offered free books to
download.
